Start with the problem you need to solve
There is no single Rig that makes every Trial easy. A Rig that is useful when you are surprised is different from one that helps you search a room or carry an objective through a dangerous route.
Stun is a practical first pick if you need a quick escape window. Choose another Rig when your runs fail for a different reason. The recommendations below follow each tool’s function; they are not a measured ranking of completion times.
| Your problem | Rig to consider | Why it fits | What you must plan around |
|---|---|---|---|
| You get cornered during an interaction | Stun | A thrown device briefly interrupts enemies | Use the opening to leave; cooldown and upgrades still matter |
| You can prepare a route before a chase | Blind | A placed mine creates a smoke window after an enemy triggers it | Deployment takes time; some enemies ignore the smoke effect |
| You or your group keep losing health | Heal | Restores your health and nearby teammates’ health | It is recovery, not a universal escape button; Detox is an upgrade |
| You do not know where nearby threats or useful objects are | X-Ray | Reveals information through walls and can highlight objectives with Recon | Information is useful only if you change your route; not every special object is highlighted |
| You need to delay a pursuer at an opening | Barricade | Blocks supported doors and openings | The opening must accept the placement; this does not bypass a required objective |
| Locks and electronic devices are slowing you down | Jammer | Hacks supported devices and padlocks | It cannot open every objective gate; useful effects depend on upgrades |
Solo and group choices
For solo learning, use Stun if your immediate problem is getting hit during an escape. Try Heal if attrition is ending your runs, or X-Ray if you need to understand the environment before you can route through it. No choice replaces learning the exit and nearby cover.
In a group, fill a missing function. If several teammates already have an interruption tool, healing or information can offer something different. A planned carry route can justify Blind or Barricade; objective utility can justify Jammer. Agree on when you will use the tool before assuming a teammate will protect the next interaction.
Purchase and upgrade costs
Speak to Noakes in the Sleep Room. The base Rig purchase costs 2 Vouchers and starts at level 1. Each upgrade costs 2 Vouchers, through level 8. That is 16 Vouchers in total for the base purchase and all seven upgrades, rather than 2 Vouchers for a fully upgraded Rig.
Check the named upgrade before relying on a specific effect. Examples include Stun’s trap-disarming upgrade, Heal’s Detox and Jammer’s Pacemaker. You can change your equipped Rig in the Sleep Room or the Shuttle before entering a Trial; purchased upgrades cannot be individually unequipped.
Why old tier lists can mislead
The March 24, 2026 Project Judas update reworked X-Ray and Barricade. X-Ray became toggleable and gained revised information and trap-related upgrades. Barricade gained multiple placements, refunds on removal and new upgrade behaviour. A ranking made before those changes describes a different set of tools.
Invasion also has separate interactions. A disruption that gives you room to escape a human Imposter is not equivalent to indefinitely stunning and killing one. Use the Invasion guide for that mode.
